“Business has only two functions – marketing and innovation.”
- Milan Kundera, Czech novelist, playwright and poet.
One field that combines innovation with marketing to give innovative marketing is viral marketing. Although just a decade old, viral campaigns have taken the world of marketing by storm. For maximum promotion through minimum expenditure, nothing can beat a viral campaign. That is why even big players with millions of dollars in marketing budgets have jumped onto the viral campaign bandwagon for its extremely high ROI and recall value among the younger generation. Examples – Burger King, TiVo, Microsoft (Halo games), etc.
Here are some tips to create a successful viral campaign:
1. Identify your consumer. You can spend a lot of futile effort and money in a viral campaign that does not target your intended demographic. Instead, find out who your intended consumers are, what they do, what they prefer to see and get. And provide that. Remember, a lady’s heel applies more pressure on the ground than an elephant’s foot, simply because the smaller force is concentrated on a smaller area. Similarly, concentrate your efforts, and your viral campaign, on only your consumers.
2. Make optimum use of existing resources. This includes conducting research on prevalent trends on news aggregators like Digg and video sharing sites like YouTube, to spreading the message of the viral campaign through social networking sites like Facebook and forums like Yahoo Groups. There are a lot of resources already available to help your campaign become successful; use them.
3. Create your own content and distribute it widely. You can write an e-book and distribute it for free. You can tie up with various websites and allow them to distribute the e-book in lieu of a small advertisement. You can create attractive web templates and animation, and allow people to distribute them as long as an advertisement for your product or service is also included. Write articles relating to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their E-zine, newsletter, magazine or E-books with due acknowledgment. Spread the word.
