How to Recognize a Social Media Addiction

Social Media Addiction, defined as physiological dependence on social media platforms and contents can result in mental problems, marital discords and insomnia. You can recognize a social media addict using the following signs,

  • Accessing social media extensively in a day, even during work hours.
  • Feeling anxious and agitated, if you are unable to access social media sites.
  • Spending leisure time on social media platforms rather than engaging in other pastimes.
  • Posting a personal trauma on net before intimating it to your friends and family.
  • Missing important occasions to partake in social media platforms can be a sure sign of social media addiction.
  • Opting for staying in touch using Facebook, Twitter or MySpace instead of mailing or chatting over phone.
  • Being dishonest to your family members while disclosing the exact amount of time spend on social media is an apparent sign of social media addiction.

  1. This is a great list. SO many people actually are addicted to social media and don’t realize it. You might like this video that YourTango.com did on social media addiction. It’s a PSA spoof about a family who is coping with a mom who can’t stop tweeting and playing Farmville. It made me laugh, but I totally see it as a social commentary on how our society is behaving and what our outcome might be!

  2. This sounds just like any other addiction, just replace social media with your drug or activity of choice and bingo!

When will we ever stop trying to disengage from reality and just start living…..

  3. As someone recvering from addiction and an addiction realted blogger, I applaud you for this post. This was the best article on the symptoms of social media addiction I have found online, period. In fact, it has inspired me to write an article about social media myself soon.
