During a speaking engagement and was asked “What exactly is Twitter?” I have been working with Twitter for so long that question never comes up, the fact that the question was asked made me stop and think about how far I have come over the last two years and just how much I know. Plus that when I am writing articles that it would be a good thing to explain many things from the beginner’s perspective. There are still 1000’s of beginners out there… Are you one of them?
Wikipedia tell us that “Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets.”
When you go to the Twitter website “Twitter is a real-time information network powered by people all around the world that lets you share and discover what’s happening now.”
Twitter is excellent for the beginner blogger to start. It is quick and easy because you are limited to only 140 characters. This means you don’t necessarily have to be able to write well. Twitter is full of abbreviations and intentional mis-spellings simply to stay within the 140 characters. It’s OK on Twitter.
Twitter enables you to keep up to date with what’s happening in the area of your business. You can follow the experts, read what they are doing, perhaps go back to their blogs and websites to learn more or even buy a product. I have found people on Twitter and after finding out that they provide excellent free information, purchased their products and have been very glad that I did.
Twitter is a very quick way to find people who have the same interests as you, whether it is for business or personal. Through the use of Twitter Search you can find people who are potentially interested in your products and services. You can then reply to their tweets with possible solutions or suggestions for their problems.
As Twitter becomes more and more popular 1000’s of applications are being created that allow you to use Twitter via your phone. People use Twitter for so many different reasons such as social messaging, news reporting or social media marketing. There are many who believe that Obama would not have become president without his excellent social media marketing campaigns.
