Follow Friday in Twitter- Social Media Marketing

Research shows that #FollowFriday or #FF started in January 2009, here is the tweet from Michah Baldwin that started it all…

“I am starting Follow Fridays. Every Friday, suggest a person to follow, and everyone follow him/her. Today its @username and @username.”

1,000’s of people take part in follow Friday, they recommend and promote to all of their Twitter followers people they believe add value to the community.

Exactly what is Follow Friday?

FF is where people recommend to their followers other people to follow. People are recommended because they are worthy of being followed by virtue of the fact that they add value to the community. Every Friday it is a trending topic on Twitter.

Here is what you do…

On Fridays, take the user names of any followers that you want to recommend to others to follow. Place the @ symbol before each user name and a space after each username. Place #FollowFriday or #FF at the beginning or end of the string of usernames. Place this tweet in your “What are you doing?’ input box and hit update when you are ready.

You do not want to just list a bunch of names without any reason. Tell people why you are recommending the person, you must insert why you believe they need to be followed.

For best results recommend only one person at a time or small numbers plus insert the reason why. Here is an example…

#FollowFriday @username @username Great people to #FF because they both provide great information and resources

In this example I have used both of the hashtags (#), this is not necessary I just wanted you to see both. People that follow you will believe you because you have proven to them that you provide value.

This also builds a deeper relationship with the person you recommend, they see that you recommended them which normally translates into them liking you even better now. You win both ways because when you #FF people to your followers just because they provide great information you are demonstrating that you too are an expert in your field.

#FF really is a trending topic on Fridays, watch your Twitter stream and analyze how people are “recommending” each other. You may see more tips in there, if you see someone using a technique that you like you too can adopt the technique to suit your style. Remember to have fun with it – it is “socialmedia right?
