Online Reputation Management: How to enhance your internet profile

One of the most effective ways to manage your online reputation is by enhancing your internet profile. You have to eliminate embarrassing online photos, videos, and messages.

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt once remarked, “If you have something that you do not want anyone to know, you should not be putting it out in the first place.”

It is a fact that all of us have something to keep confidential but the internet makes that tough. You must learn to protect your privacy to the extent possible and efficiently manage your online reputation.

For instance, we can have a look at Facebook – the most popular social network on the internet. Facebook is home to some of your most embarrassing photos, distasteful text etc. You should control what to show and what to hide in your internet profile.

As a first step, remove all embarrassing content from your profile in all social media sites and strictly maintain your privacy whenever you update your internet profile. Do not reveal intimate details that your friends/followers can misuse to embarrass you or damage your online reputation.

Social media sites are places where you are expected to share everything, but you should be guarded and not go over board and offer private and embarrassing facts in your internet profile.

Despite your best efforts, if an acquaintance or family member or enemy posts content you do not want anyone to see, you should take immediate steps to get them removed. You should use social media built-in content removal tools.

Even if certain social media sites do not permit you to delete content uploaded by another person, you can at least ensure they do not show up anywhere on your profile, wall, or photo stream.  If possible, you can also politely ask your friend/family member to remove the embarrassing content

You should request the person who posted the embarrassing content regardless of your relationship – explaining to him/her how such content is damaging your online reputation.

There could be reasons why a friend, enemy, or family member wants to retain the embarrassing content about you on their profile. In all such cases, you can try to contact social media with a complaint.

If you do not want embarrassing content posted on your profile page or wall, take proactive measures and block it in advance by using Privacy Settings.
